The Amsterdam Brassquintet was founded in January 2004. In its short existence the quintet has done many different things among which are co-operating in a theatre production aboard a real Soviet submarine, a tour to the island of CuraƧao and a concert at the party of the minister plenipotentiary of the Dutch Antilles. The repertoire of the quintet consists of a mixture of classical, pop and jazz music, but also a growing number of contemporary pieces. In February 2006 the quintet recorded their first CD, named "First". All of the members are studying at Dutch conservatories and are ambitious, young musicians
Thomas Piet (trompet)
Thomas Piet was born on July 25th 1987 in Purmerend. His first musiclessons he received at Fanfare Zuiderwoude on the fluglehorn. After a short while he switched his fluglhorn for a trumpet and got his A, B and C diplomas with his teacher Ger Klein. Later with Erwin ter Bogt (solo trompettist Holland Symfonia) he passed for his D exam cum laude, after which Thomas received an honourful accreditation on the Prinses Christina Concours. In 2004 Thomas was allowed as a laureaat to hand out a price for the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fund on the same concours. Since 2003 Thomas Plays as principle trumpetplayer in the National Youth Fanfare Orchestra. Since 2005 he is in the preliminary program with Theo Wolters (from the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest) at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Thomas took masterclasses with masterclasses Peter Masseurs (KCO) and Frits Damrow (KCO) Besides all of these activities Thomas is often asked as a replacement in a lot of Dutch orchestras and ensembles.
Thomas Geerts (trompet)
Born on January 28th 1983, Thomas Geerts started trumpetlessons aged 9 at the Musicschool of Amsterdam on the Bachstraat, with Frans van der Kroft. After one year he had to go look for another teacher because he moved to a little village in the province of South-Holland. There he found Erik Waerts and Erik brought Thomas to his admittance exam for the preliminary year of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Since 2002 Thomas studies classical trumpet with Frits Damrow at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (CvA) and he again he can be found in the same Bachstraat where he once started but now at a building of the conservatory. Besides the trumpet Thomas started in 2004 also the mainsubject conducting for windbands with Danny Oosterman and he follows jazz and improvisation lessons with Charly Green. Thomas composes as well and for one of his compositions for the Amsterdam Trumpetquartet Thomas won an originalityprice at the Yamaha Trumpet Contest in Berlin in November 2004. At the moment Thomas plays with the Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest, Amsterdam Brassquintet, Bollenstreek Brassquintet, Sugarfix, Quite Simple and he conducts an youthwindband. Misha Sporck (french horn)
Misha Sporck was born on November 9th1983 in Tilburg, as the son of a two pianoplayers. Jo Sporck (Misha's father) is a composer as well. From the moment he was 6, Misha got piano lessons and started composing simple songs. A year later he started with the viola as well and later on, finaly the french horn. Misha attended the AVO-highschool in The Hague, which is linked tot the royal conservatory of The Hague. There he received composing lessons from Roderik de Man and hornlessons from Oldrich Milek, Since 2001 Misha studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, with Daan Manneke as his composition teacher and Peter Hoekmeijer as his horn teacher. As a composer Misha was laureaat at the Prinses Christina Concours (2000), winner of the Bachconcours (2000) which was issued by the Residentie Orkest. As a french hornplayer Misha has played with the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra (principle horn), with the National Youth Orchestra and he is member of the Ricciotti ensemble.
Rolf Hoogenberg (trombone)
Rolf Hoogenberg was born in 1984 in Middenmeer (NH) and was raised in Purmerend. On his ninth he started playing trombone at the Music school of Waterland, and his teacher was Wim de Vreugt. In 2007 Rolf finished his bachelor study base trombone, with Raymond Munnecom, and his bachelor wind band conducting at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. During this time he also followed a minor in composition, with Daan Manneke.
After several years playing in the Youth Orchestra Holland (JON) Rolf is now a principle in the National Youth Fanfare Orchestra, with which he also played as a soloist.
Besides an active career as a playing musician, Rolf is also a trombone teacher at several music schools and he conducts the orchestras Soli Zaandijk and Brass Band Almere.
The composition asignment Stadsgezichten for the Music-Olympiade 1998/1999 inspired Rolf to write a piece about his hometown, Purmerend, which he called Townscape. With this composition Rolf did not only win the Music-Olympiade in the field of fanfare, but he also won the price for best composition for windband of the season from the NIB. This price was given to him personaly by Johan de Meij at the ABCO-concert on 12 december 1999, where Townscape was played by Fanfare Patrimonium from Amstelveen with their conductor Ruud Pletting. Later on also the next pieces appeard Nuestra Lengua en Developments, published by Mansarda Sintra and Bound Sketches published by Molenaar.
Niels Lammers (tuba)
Niels is from Heeg, a nice little place in Friesland. When he was 10, he started playing the euphonium, but switched after 2 years to the E-flat-tuba... After more then 10 years, his choice seemed to be right: He played with several symphonic windbands like the former Band of the mounted Arms(a military fanfare orchestra) and the Dutch Symphonic Wind Orchestra, and later on he played the tuba in the Dutch Student Orchestra, Amsterdam Symfony Orchestra and the winter tour and summeracademy of the NJO, the Dutch Youth Orchestra. His teacher is Bernard Beniers (tubaplayer of the Radio Pilharmonic Orchestra Holland).
