Founded in Vienna by the flutist Silvia Gelos and the pianist Gustavo Balanesco as a chamber music ensemble, the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien is a flexible formations for music of the twentieth century.
It focuses in its programmes on composers who are rarely or hardly performed - encompassing former personae non gratae as well as young Austrian talents.
Apart from pieces of the Zweite Wiener Schule and Austrian composers of the younger and youngest generations,
the five young musicians direct their attention to the music from
Mediterranean and Eastern European countries as well as the Far East, China, India, etc.
In recent years, an intense study of Austrian Exile Music 1938-45, and music from Theresienstadt has played an important role.
